Alligator leather is revered as an exotic leather product. The American alligator used to be on the endangered species but was taken off the list in the early 1990's. The alligator is a predator animal, so wearing the skin of an alligator can be perceived as being exotic, daring and sexy.

Several types of activities are commonly the source of interactions resulting in gator attacks on humans. Attempting to capture the animal constitutes 17.4% of attacks. Swimming and fishing related attacks are also common intersections of reptile and man. Additionally, retrieving golf balls composes about 10% of violent confrontations.

Alligators are often mistaken for their cousins the crocodiles and caimans. However, their snouts are broader, flat, and rounded on the end. Also, their lower teeth cannot be seen when their mouths are closed.

"One and a half million alligators are getting desperate and have started coming into town in search of water causing big problems. That's where my special mission will come in - dealing with nuisance alligators."

If you're swimming in a lake or a river, you're putting yourself in an alligator's natural habitat. Before you go into the water, make sure there are no warning signs advertising the presence of gators. If you do see the animals, slowly and quietly get out of the water and leave the area. Despite popular perception, gators are very fast and can attack quickly.

Experienced anglers know to be patient when the alligator gar chews on their bait and then grabs it, stripping off as much as 50 yards of line. The fish usually has the bait in its bony mouth at this time and a hook will only scrape out if one strikes now. After stopping its run, the gar will swallow the bait and begin to move again. This is the time to set the hook!

In contrast, there are over a dozen species of crocodiles from all over the world. The most common is the Brown Caiman, which is found in Central and South America. Generally, caiman skin is drier and stiffer than alligator skin, and significantly less durable. Unfortunately, many items made from caiman skins are deceptively labeled as alligator products.

Once an alligator starts being fed by humans they will start coming up and investigating people thinking they will get a free hand out. They inevitable end to this at some point will either be the alligator being killed by a scared human being, or the alligator attacking a human. So please help to keep these wonderful creatures afraid of us humans and do not feed them.

A few days ago a Palm Bay resident feeding a 3 foot alligator ended up with one nasty bite on her hand. Danielle Rivera, 25, was visiting Manatee Point with her 3 year old son and her mother. This place is very frequented by people who want to feed fish and watch manatees. Out of nowhere Danielle got a bright idea to feed an alligator and not only feed it, but feed it by hand.
